Your brainwave

Can you remember a time in your life when everything was going well? You might have been playing sport, playing an instrument, painting, studying or working. You may have noticed that time seemed to fly past and you had no worries, just an intense focus upon what you were doing.

When you achieve this state, you have generally triggered a slower brain rhythm... the alpha brain rhythm.

In the 1950’s Dr Jo Kamier made a machine that showed the electrical output of the brain - an electroencephalogram (EEG). He found that the brain produces different levels of activity that can be measured on an EEG machine – brain waves range from about 28 to 0.5 cycles per second (hertz). The brain waves vary depending upon the state of cortical arousal our brain is in.

The four major brain rhythms are:

  • Beta,

  • Alpha,

  • Theta, and

  • Delta.

The brain rhythms are summarised in the following table:

Description

Cycles per second

Attributes of this brain state

Sports you can play in this brain state

Beta

Used by adults the most. You are able to learn new information which is stored in short term memory. The mind is focussed on the physical senses, time, space, logic and reason. In this state you can often be stressed. Beta demands and uses large amounts of physical resources.

13 - 25

Physical world

Sight, sound, smell, touch

Action

Highly abstract, complex mental functioning

Outer conscious levels

Strengthens basic physiological functions

Strengthens the Mind and Ego in a positive way

Alertness and concentration

Rugby League

Soccer

Netball

Softball

Alpha

You are relaxed and can retain information in your long-term memory. The mind is intuitive, inspired and creative. This level is known to aid in migraine/headache alleviation. The Alpha and theta border helps to boost the body’s immune functions. Neuro-chemical levels of norepinephrine, serotonin and Beta-endorphins are increased.

8 - 12

Intuitive

Peak performance

Less anxiety and correspondingly stronger immune systems

Super learning

No time or space

Positive thinking

Emotional balance and mood elevation

Enhances serotonin release

Facilitates nicotine withdrawal

Deficient in alcoholics

Expanded awareness of synchronicities and coincidences

Swimming

Jogging

Theta

You are very dreamy and it is hard to focus on things around you. Most people fall asleep. The mind is unaware of physical sensations. Control of functions such as the heart beat and digestion occur here. We normally experience theta only fleetingly as we rise up out of the depths of delta upon waking, or drifting off to sleep. We are in a waking dream. A brief period in Theta (about 5 – 15 minutes) can restore the normal brain ratio of sodium and potassium levels giving a feeling of being mentally refreshed rather than mentally fatigued.

4 – 7

Emotions Including pain and pleasure

Super learning

Moving beyond knowledge into knowing

Heightened receptivity

Reprogramming the mind

Subconscious

Brain cells can restore sodium and potassium levels which can be worn down during beta

Deep meditation

Cards (maybe)

Delta

This is the level of the unconscious, deep sleep, coma and anaesthesia. The only things that you can do are all the basic movements controlled by the reptilian phase. The mind is unaware of the physical plane.

0.5 – 3

Unconscious/Coma

Deep sleep

Human growth hormone released

Beneficial for healing and regeneration

Access to collective unconscious
